  • Why You Should Sail: 5 Reasons to Get Out on the Water!

Whether you’re brand new to sailing or just need a push to get back out there, here are five great reasons to hit the water with us this season:

    1. Enjoy Beautiful Views

Lake Michigan has been consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful lakes in the country, and Kenosha is known as one of the most scenic harbor cities in the Midwest. Enjoy amazing views of historic buildings and bustling beaches as you watch the shoreline, or take in the shimmer of the sun reflecting off the waves on the horizon.

    2. Make New Friends

More advanced sailors can handle a boat solo, but when you take introductory lessons, you’ll be working with instructors and fellow students aboard a Rhodes 19 sailboat. You’ll rotate between rigging the ropes and steering the helm, learning the importance of teamwork. For example, everyone must call out “ready to tack!” before the person at the helm makes a turn.

After four (or more) sessions, you’ll have shared plenty of laughs and learning moments with your crewmates. Many groups even gather for a celebratory dinner after their final session. As you progress to intermediate lessons, you might reconnect with familiar faces or meet new sailing enthusiasts. It’s a great way to expand your local network!

Looking to stay involved? Volunteer with us at KCSC or check out nearby yacht clubs and community sailing centers in Milwaukee, Racine, and beyond. You can also connect with other sailors online. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram to keep up with local events and opportunities.

    3. Take Amazing Photos and Videos

Not only will you enjoy beautiful views while sailing, but it’s also a great setting for fun, memorable photos. Pose with your crew, bring a captain’s hat, or recreate the iconic “Titanic” shot at the bow. Pro tip: Bring a waterproof phone pouch or waterproof digital camera so you can capture those moments worry-free.

    4. Visit Unique & Exciting Places

There’s a lot to explore right in the Kenosha Harbor area, but once you get more skilled, you can expand your horizons: literally! Sail north to Reefpoint Marina in Racine or south to North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor. Sailing becomes more than just a hobby—it’s an adventurous (and traffic-free) way to travel.

    5. Gain Confidence from Learning a Skill

“How have those sailing lessons been going?” will soon turn into “Hey, when are you taking me sailing?” Sailing is a great conversation starter and a serious confidence boost. Plus, all that sail-handling and teamwork? It burns between 200 to 400 calories per hour, so it’s a fun way to stay active too.
