This introductory course for adults will teach you the basics of sailing. Prior to the first class you will be sent a link to an online, self-paced lesson to familiarize you with boat parts and sailing terminology. That allows us to start you on the water where you will have the opportunity to handle a 19′ Rhodes sailboat.

We will teach your child how to sail in a small sailboat in the Kenosha Harbor. We want children to have fun and enjoy the summer while learning how to appreciate and be safe around water.
Students are encouraged to attend multiple sessions.

Youth will develop confidence on and off the water, gain familiarity with fundamental sailing skills and enhance their respect for water. Students will learn such skills as:

Teens will learn about safety, boat parts, rigging, knots, sailing terminology, and points of sail. On-the-water instruction includes tacking and gybing, steering, boat balance, launching, docking, and capsize recovery. Family sessions are scheduled individually with the instructor and will consist of approximately 15 hours of instruction. We typically scheduled 3-hour classes over five weeks, but we are flexible and will do our best to accommodate your schedule. Families are considered to be one person over 21 and up to 3 other people. Participants are introduced to a variety of boats large enough for an entire family or small enough for single-handed sailing. Pending the interest of family members, training in the operation of powered safety boats can be included.

Boy Scouts may work with a Boy Scout Counselor toward a sailing merit badge. Scouts will learn about safety, boat parts, rigging, knots, sailing terminology, and points of sail. KCSC recognizes people are working with complex scheduling issues. We can arrange private lessons for anyone of any age. Schedules can be set up as needed by the student. This method of learning can work well for the person who has experience sailing, but it has been a while and they need refreshing; the more advanced student who wants to work intensely to increase specific skills; or someone who wants something other than group instruction. The Kenosha Community Sailing Center offers indoor winter wooden boatbuilding workshops. Youth ages 10-14 are invited to build a wooden boat with us. Held over three Saturday mornings, your child will learn the basic parts of a boat and how to use hand tools safely.
