The Kenosha Community Sailing Center (KCSC) relies on the dedication of volunteers to support our operations, programs, and community outreach efforts. Below are detailed descriptions of volunteer roles, expectations, benefits, and frequently asked questions to help you get involved.


Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities

Facility and Boat Maintenance

Volunteers in this role assist with the upkeep of our boats, facilities, and grounds. Tasks may involve physical labor, such as lifting heavy items, or using tools like hand tools, hammers, paintbrushes, sanders, and power washers. Some activities may require getting hands-on and working in outdoor conditions.

Work-Days

Volunteers may work independently, alongside other volunteers, or with the management team. Regular maintenance days are scheduled throughout the year, with additional special workdays in April/May and October/November to prepare for the season’s opening and closing.

Community Outreach

Volunteers are needed to represent KCSC at community events, such as the Kenosha Expo or Farmers Market, by staffing vendor booths. Responsibilities include engaging with community members, distributing promotional materials, answering questions about programs, and overseeing interactive activities at the booth. This role requires standing for extended periods and maintaining a friendly, approachable demeanor.

Special Event Shifts

  • Season Opening: Setting up facilities, moving docks, and launching boats.
  • Season Closing: Removing boats from the water, winterizing boats, and preparing facilities for the off-season.

  • Lakefest: Assisting with our summer community event.

Regular Shifts

Rental Assistance

On busy weekends, rental assistance roles can be fast-paced. Volunteers’ welcome new clients, assist with carrying, launching, and retrieving boats at the dock, and enter waiver and evaluation data into our database. This role requires a positive, proactive attitude while working with diverse staff and clients.

Custom Shifts

For flexibility, volunteers can schedule custom shifts that fit their availability. Contact the Outreach Coordinator to arrange a suitable time.

Community Nights

These events invite community service and nonprofit organizations to use our rental equipment and experience sailing, typically on Thursday evenings. Volunteers are needed to:

  • Organize the event logistics.
  • Greet visitors and ensure their safe use of rental equipment.
  • Assist with launching and docking equipment.
  • Accompany visitors on boats if needed.
  • Provide refreshments and ensure cleanup at the end of the evening.

The Crewman Program

The Crewman Program is an exclusive volunteer opportunity limited to 10 participants, with higher expectations and corresponding benefits.

Requirements:

  • Commit to volunteering 25 hours within a calendar year, including:
    • 2 Rental Assistance shifts.
    • 2 Outreach functions or Community Night events.
    • 1 Maintenance/Workday shift.
    • 1 Event shift.
  • Attend mandatory orientation meetings.
  • Fulfill all scheduled shifts and report volunteer hours.
  • Participate in individualized training for specific tasks.

Expectations and Benefits

KCSC Expectations of All Volunteers:

  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by an adult or with written parental permission.
  • Sign a liability waiver prior to or at the first shift.
  • Accept assignments they can confidently complete, ensuring a clear understanding of the role.
  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts and notify the Outreach Coordinator if running late or needing to cancel.
  • Collaborate as part of the KCSC team to fulfill our mission and vision.

How Often Can I Volunteer?

Volunteers can participate as often as they’d like—whether once or every week. There is no minimum hour requirement (except for the Crewman Program), and all contributions are appreciated.

Can I Volunteer to Support a Specific Community or Program?

How Do I Cancel a Scheduled Shift?

If you need to cancel, simply call or email us to let us know. While 24-hour notice is preferred to allow time to fill the shift, we understand that unexpected circumstances may arise.

When Can I Redeem My Free Rental Hours?

Free rental hours can be redeemed immediately after your shift or saved for later in the season, such as a pleasant day in August. Hours are valid for the entire season but cannot be rolled over to the next year.
